Texas Parent-Taught Course Includes:

Online Instruction

When enrollment opens, enroll in the online course. Before any instruction begins, obtain TDLR instructor authorization and the PTDE Program Guide. Complete every required instructional hour and observe the applicable daily limits.

Certificate Milestones

The learner and driver-license certificate milestones require all applicable instruction, assessments, and completion evidence. Completing online hours alone does not complete the parent-taught driving phase. Follow current DPS application requirements.

Requirements and Eligibility

Texas Parent-Taught Driver Education has requirements for both the student and the qualifying parent or designated instructor.

  • Students can begin the course at age 14; a learner license requires age 15 and all applicable DPS requirements.
  • Before any instruction begins, obtain TDLR instructor authorization for this student and receive the PTDE Program Guide. TDLR charges a separate $20 application fee, which is not included in the $59.95 course fee.
  • Verify the instructor’s eligibility under current TDLR and DPS rules, including driving history and criminal-history restrictions. Read the official instructor requirements and authorization steps.
  • Driving Logic provides the 24-hour online instructional course. Driving Logic does not provide a physical classroom or behind-the-wheel instruction.
  • The qualifying parent or designated instructor handles 7 hours of driving instruction and 7 hours of in-car observation. The student also completes 30 hours of supervised driving practice, including at least 10 hours at night. Use the required logs and follow the permit and daily instruction limits.
