Updated June 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte To get a Texas learner’s permit at 15, your teen completes Module 1 (the first 6 hours) of a TDLR-approved driver education course to earn the DE-964E certificate, then applies at DPS with the required documents. At the appointment they pass the vision and knowledge tests and pay the $16 permit fee, after which the supervised-driving period begins. The single most common delay is arriving without a complete document set, so gathering everything before the appointment is the key to a one-visit trip. Updated June 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte To complete the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) course, go to impacttexasdrivers.dps.texas.gov, select ITTD (not the adult ITAD), watch the roughly two-hour video, and print the completion certificate. Teens take it within 90 days before the driving skills test, since the certificate expires after 90 days. ITTD is separate from the PTDE or TDE driver education course, so completing the video does not replace the 32-hour course a teen also needs. Applies to Texas teen driver education and licensing (ages 14–17). Requirements are set by TDLR (driver education) and the Texas DPS

Updated June 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte To choose a Texas parent-taught drivers ed course online, start with the non-negotiable: TDLR approval, which you can verify on the TDLR website, and confirm the course issues both the DE-964E and DE-964 certificates. From there, look for clear behind-the-wheel parent guides, progress tracking, and support that matches how your family will work through the 32 hours. A good course makes the certificates, forms, and steps obvious so the program guide and DPS visits go smoothly. Applies to Texas teen driver education and licensing (ages 14–17). Updated June 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte Online parent-taught drivers ed in Texas works in a clear sequence: you buy the PTDE Program Guide from TDLR ($20, emailed since January 2026), enroll in a 32-hour TDLR-approved online course, and complete Module 1 to earn the DE-964E certificate for a learner’s permit. Most families use the concurrent method — get the permit after Module 1, then continue the classroom alongside behind-the-wheel practice — while some finish all 32 classroom hours first. The teen drives with a qualifying parent or adult, logs the required practice, and completes the course to earn

Updated June 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte The Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) course takes about two hours, watched online as video segments that you do not have to finish in one sitting. The adult version, ITAD, is about one hour, so the length depends on which program your age requires — teens 15 to 17 take the two-hour ITTD. Because the completion certificate is valid for only 90 days, the bigger timing question is not the runtime but when you watch it relative to the driving test. Applies to Texas teen driver education and licensing (ages 14–17). Requirements

Updated June 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte Texas PTDE takes as long as the licensing milestones require, and the binding factor is not the classroom but the 6-month learner’s permit holding period. The 32 classroom hours can be completed online in a few weeks at a teen’s own pace, but the permit must be held at least six months before a provisional license, so most families’ timelines run at least that long. Behind-the-wheel practice happens across that period, which is one more reason the concurrent method is popular. Applies to Texas teen driver education and licensing (ages 14–17). Requirements

Updated June 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte If you fail the Texas driving test, you do not lose your chance at a license — DPS allows you to retake the road test after addressing what went wrong. Common reasons for a failed test include unsafe lane changes, rolling stops, poor speed control, and incomplete checks, and the examiner’s feedback points you to what to practice. There may be a waiting period or a re-test fee depending on the office, so the practical next step is to confirm the local retake rules and prepare specifically for the skills that caused

Updated June 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte After you pass the Texas driving test, DPS issues a temporary paper license on the spot, and your permanent card is mailed to you, typically within about two to three weeks. You will need your documents and certificates in order at the appointment — for adults 18 to 24 that includes your ADE-1317 and ITAD certificates — and you can track your card’s status online if it is delayed. Passing the road test is the last exam, but a few finishing steps and the mail stand between you and the physical license.

Updated June 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte Texas allows TDLR-authorized third-party providers to administer the driving skills (road) test, which can mean shorter waits than booking the test at a DPS office. You still meet the same requirements — completed courses, the free ITAD video, and your documents — but you take the road test through an approved provider and then complete licensing steps with DPS. It is a scheduling option, not a shortcut around any requirement, so the eligibility rules and paperwork are the same as testing at DPS. Applies to first-time Texas driver licensing. Updated June 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte A Texas driver license lets you drive and doubles as government photo identification, while a Texas ID card provides identification only with no driving privileges. You choose an ID card if you do not drive or are not yet ready to license, and a driver license if you need to drive — and both can be issued as REAL ID-compliant with the star marking when you provide the required documents. If your goal is a license, the adult path runs through the ADE course, which waives the DPS written test, so it
